Kay Tse is a Hong Kong Cantopop singer. She was a newcomer to the music industry in 2005, and is known for her versatile vocal range and expertise in various music genres, especially in jazz.

She first achieved mainstream success in 2008 with the song <>. Due to the hugely successful and the critically acclaimed album <>, Tse won many awards in January 2009. Media praised her as "Grass-Root Queen", increasing her influence in HK music. Joey Yung, Miriam Yeung, Denise Ho, and Kay Tse are currently deemed as the 4 key HK female singers.

At that time Tse was working as a piano teacher.

F4's least idol member takes a break from Tai Chi to release his second solo album Getting Real. Arriving with little promotion or pop fanfare, Ken Chu's two-disc sophomore album is divided into "Now" and "Then" with the former featuring six new tracks and the latter collecting 16 songs from his previous solo album, the F4 albums, and soundtracks. Released back in 2005, Ken's first album On Ken's Time was a genuinely pleasant surprise with its easygoing mid-tempo guitar and pop numbers, and his latest effort follows in the same vein. Though Getting Real doesn't surpass its predecessor, it also doesn't disappoint. And with all his past singles making it onto Disc 2, this album is definitely a great way to get all of Ken's songs.

Anyone expecting Eason Chan's latest Cantonese album H3M to be anything as fresh as his previous album Listen To may be a little disappointed. Written and produced along with the band for his ongoing world tour (each member, except for band leader Pal Sinn, contributes one song) as a commemorative album, Eason's first Cantonese album in 17 months is a return to his Cantopop roots from his days at the now-defunct Capital Artists. With almost no usual Eason-style genre-bending this time around, H3M consists almost entirely of easy listening Cantopop ballads made for easy consumption by the mass audiences. For fans of his later works, the album is considerably more monotonous than his recent albums, but with Cantopop fans already declaring this the album of the year, H3M may become the textbook example of the great cultural divides even music can have.

Musically, H3M is a continuation of sorts from Eason's 2008 Mandarin album Don't Want to Let Go. The general atmosphere of the album is fairly light, mostly with ballads that lean towards easy listening. It never even approaches the heaviness of some of his earlier hits, and most songs are ready for challenging Karaoke renditions. The only exception to the rule is the fun, big band song Allegro, Opus 3.3 a.m. (Track 1), a breezy mediation on lyric writing. Songwriter Gary Tong's twisty composition allows Eason to have fun stretching his vocals, showing his full versatility as a vocalist. The dense composition also poses great challenge for lyricist/comic illustrator Siu Hark, who refers to some of Cantopop's greatest lyricists to tell a story about a lyricist's frustrations while writing the ultimate love ballad, and comes up with something wonderfully self-deprecating, even though the speed of the song makes most of the second half incomprehensible.

As an admirer of Eason's versatile musical sensibilities, H3M is naturally a bit underwhelming. This is certainly his most accessible album in years, simply for its resemblance to his early musical style. However, in terms of Eason's 13-year musical journey, this album is one step too far to the past. Eason's music has always been ahead of Cantopop trends, and this album simply follows it. Then again, it would certainly be unfair to judge an album based on a musician's 13 years' worth of music. The favorable response by Hong Kong pop fans so far is not entirely unbelievable, as H3M is an album that slowly grows on listeners with its easygoing atmosphere, Karaoke-friendly music, and sometimes meaningful lyrics. However, an Eason Chan album should be judged at a higher standard than just any Cantopop album. Even on a typical Cantopop standard, H3M earns only a passing grade.

TAIPEI - Hong Kong's Eason Chan and Taiwanese pop prince Jay Chou garnered top honours Saturday at Taiwan's Golden Melody Awards, dubbed the Chinese-language Grammys.

Chan picked up the most coveted Best Album of the Year accolade for "Don't Want to Let Go," although he missed out on the top singer prize to the absent Chou, who took three awards.

"I am especially happy to receive the award from fellow Hong Konger Jacky Cheung," an emotional Chan told the crowd.

"I want to thank the judges ... I love you. I love Taiwan," he said as cheering fans chanted his name.

Chou, who led the race with eight nominations, saw off Chan, heartthrob singer/actor Leehom Wang and Kong Kong's Khalil Fong to take the Best Mandarin Male Singer title.

He also took Best Song of the Year for the heart-warming "Fragrant Rice" and Best Music Video for the dazzling "Mr. Magic" he directed and performed from the top-selling album "Capricorn."

Versatile Taiwan singer Sandee Chan was the night's dark horse when she was crowned Best Mandarin Female Singer for "If One Thing Is Important" which she also produced.

"I am very happy to receive this award. I am not naturally great at singing but I spend a lot of time to do better," she said.

Chan beat last year's winner Tanya Chua of Singapore, five-time nominee Jasmine Leong of Malaysia and Taiwanese veteran singer Tsai Chin.

Hong Kong's "God of Songs" Jacky Cheung and Taiwanese-language songstress Jody Chiang won the audience vote on the most popular songs in Taiwan in the past two decades.

However, this year's ceremony struggled to attract much star power, with the absence of Jay Chou, Leehom Wang or other big names such as pop diva A-Mei.

Performers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore competed in more than 20 categories at the 20th Golden Melody Awards.
