Firstly, was Patrick Watson’s gig on Tuesday da bomb or what!

Ahem, okay, so here’s a quick update on what’s been happening this week that’s of importance – well, to me, anyway. Whether it means anything to you depends on whether we share the same tastes, innit?

On the gig front:

Firstly, Taiwan female trio S.H.E. will be in town on Apr 17, as part of their S.H.E Is The One World Tour.

This is the first full-on gig by Selina, Hebe and Ella in three years, so it should be interesting to see what it’s going to be like. The gig will happen at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, 8pm and tickets are priced from $88 to $168. Mind you, their opening gig in Hong Kong sold out within a couple of days, and organisers here are expecting the same thing, so you’d better hurry if you want to make sure you get yours. You can start buying from tomorrow (Jan 22).

Our concern is that news has come that it falls on the same date as Taiwanese rockers Mayday’s gig too, which happens at the Padang. The rock quintet’s stop is part of their DNA World Tour.

Apparently, the date is inevitable as that’s the only free date available to the band and the Padang. Incidentally, this is the first time their outdoor gig here will be ticketed – the last two times they performed for free. We’ll let you know of ticketing details as soon as we get them.

Also on sale tomorrow, tickets for the Dinosaur Jr’s Mosaic show are up for grabs at Sistic outlets and at the Esplanade box office. Price from $40 to $100.

And if you didn’t know yet, Norwegian duo Kings Of Convenience have added a SECOND DATE on the Esplanade’s Mosaic calendar after the first sold out like, very quickly. The added date is Mar 18 and tickets go from $40 to $80.

On the album front:

Here’s a tasty treat for U2 fans! No, they’re not coming to town, but if you’re a subscriber to their website U2.com, you can get this brand new U2 collection that you won’t find for sale in the shops or online.

According to them it features tracks never previously made available. “And it’s strictly limited edition”. Ooh.

It’s called Artificial Horizon and it’s a remix album featuring 13 tracks, such as the Grand Jury Mix of If God Will Send His Angels, Trent Reznor’s version of Vertigo, Jacknife Lee’s remake of Fast Cars, David Holmes’ remix of Beautiful Day and I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight (Live U2360° Remix).

Again, you have to be a subscriber to get this.

Speaking of new albums, Aging Youth has announced several releases aimed for this year…

B-Quartet will be releasing their as-yet-untitled followup to the critically acclaimed Tomorrow Is Our Permanent Address within this quarter of the year. It’s 70 per cent done, and I, for one, can’t wait for this, since I loved Tomorrow.

Singer-songwriter Inch Chua (above left) too, has a new album, Wallflower, slated for July. And like her EP, The Bedroom, it will be FREE! She’s one to watch out for this year – she’s also been invited to South By Southwest, so who knows what else is in store? There’ll be a gig to raise funds for that, so watch this space for more news…

Others also slated for album releases this year are “art metalheads” Lunarin, who are apparently “exploring more ambient textures”, and the fabulous Lard Brothers, with album No 3, Simply As Designed targeted for an August release. According to Lard Brother Robin Ng: “It’s like those Best-Of-The-Eighties compilation albums which you find in the record store’s bargain bin!”

So definitely a must-have! Haha!

Well, that’s it for now. Tune in again, when we’ll have more news that you can use and abuse. And now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to sink myself into more Patrick Watson.

Sin Chew Daily reported that Leong is organising a 20-table dinner at a five-star hotel and have the wedding ceremony in Taiwan in March.

The invitations are not in the traditional red. Instead, black cards with gold wordings were sent out.

The daily reported that guests’ names were written by Leong in calligraphy on a red envelope.

Prior to the Kuala Lumpur dinner, Leong and fiance Tony Zhao will have a private wedding party in the Philippines at the end of this month.

> China Press reported that a 40-year-old soldier from Sentul physically abused his wife for checking his handphone.

The 39-year-old victim and mother of four told the daily that her hot-tempered husband began abusing her ever since he started having an affair with another woman two years ago.

She said her husband not only beat her but also pushed her head against the wall and tried to strangle her.

The woman said she was seriously injured when she checked one of his four handphones recently to find out who his mistress was, and had to be admitted to hospital.

She lodged a police report on Monday after being discharged from hospital.

ZON Chan played Somewhere Over The Rainbow on an acoustic guitar, while Tan Share Ler went for a classical number, Schubert's Impromptu, on the piano.

Both of them are taking part in the contest, Brand's Music Changes Lives with Wang Lee Hom, a collaboration between Brand's and Stomp.

Said 17-year-old Zon Chan: "I took part in this competition not for the fame, but in the hope that my music will have an impact. This contest has given me a great boost as a future guitarist."

Hosted on Stomp, Asia's leading citizen-journalism and social networking website, the contest seeks to gives youths aged 13 to 18 years a chance to show off their musical talent, win prizes and perform at singer Wang Lee Hom's showcase.

Fifteen people have submitted their videos for the contest, which opened on Dec 1 last year and will close on Feb 28.

The top eight musicians will be selected through a combination of public voting and scoring by a panel of judges.

From the eight, Wang, 33 will pick the top four musicians who will perform with him at the University Cultural Centre on April 24.

Each winner will also walk away with $3,000 in cash plus $2,000 for musical instruments or music lessons, a $300 Brand's hamper and two pairs of front-row seats to the showcase.

On top of this, the schools of the top four musicians will have $5,000 pledged to their music departments, and receive five pairs of showcase tickets.

MUSIC CHANGES LIVES: International star and Brand's ambassador, Wang Lee Hom, will pick four young musicians to perform with him on April 24.
Brand's believes that every musically gifted teen should be given the opportunity to develop their talent. The company is therefore offering a rare opportunity to young, talented musicians in Singapore.

Wang, a strong supporter of grooming budding talents, said: "This is rare and excellent opportunity for discovery, so send in your videos today!"

If you play an instrument, simply send us a video clip of yourself playing any song from any genre to stomp@stomp.com.sg

The large crowd at the event

THE first MY Astro Music Award 2009 saw a bevy of singers and bands from Hongkong, Taiwan and Malaysia gathered under one roof at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, last Saturday night. Jointly presented by MY FM and Astro, the event was telecast live on AEC (Astro Channel 301) while some 5,000 people went up the hill to cheer on their favourite artistes.

Among the stars who turned up for the event were Eason Chan, Khalil Fong, Kay Tse and Fama from Hongkong; Lala Hsu, Jeremy Ji, Rachel Liang, Sodagreen and Chang Yun-jing from Taiwan; and local artistes Nicholas Teo, Z-Chen, Thomas and Jack, Andrew Tan, Suki Low, Lan Kah Fai and Chen Keat Yoke.

The award show, hosted by MY FM deejays Jack Lim, Wan Wai Fun, Royce Tan and Bernard Hiew, was held to honour those who had made their mark in music and songs last year.

Eason Chan, who is considered the God of Song in the music industry, was in his element as an award presenter, mercilessly teasing the already nervous nominees in the best national male and female singers categories.

He even made a joke about newlywed Fish Leong, who was absent from the show. “She is always smiling and seems so blissful all the time. Whenever I see her, I have an urge to pinch her cheeks! But now that she’s married, I don’t think I should do that,” he said, prompting laughter from the crowd.

Leong’s Love Song won one of the 20 Golden Melody awards given out that night. The singer was also named best national female singer. Her cousin, Z-Chen, accepted her awards on her behalf.

One of the biggest winners of the night, local boy Teo happily received the best national male award from Chan. Teo also won two Golden Melody awards for his songs – The Moment of Silence and Low Profile – as well as the most popular singer award.

Lan Kah Fai Thanking his fans

Hot favourites Khalil Fong and Kay Tse were also not far behind with four and two awards respectively. Tse sprang an upset by taking the best international female singer award from heavyweights Chang Hui Mei (A-Mei) and Jolin Tsai.

But she proved she deserved the win when she serenaded the crowd with Song of the Year in her pitch-perfect voice.

Another surprise winner that night was Suki Low, 8TV’s 2006 One in a Million champion, who walked away with the best national female newcomer award. While she is not exactly new to the music industry, the fact that she is new to the Chinese music industry somehow qualified her as a newcomer for this award.

First-time in Malaysia Lala Hsu and Sodagreen from Taiwan were surprised to learn that they have quite a big fan base here.

The nominees for the various awards

“I’m very happy to receive an award here. It feels that all my hard work from all these years has finally paid off,” Hsu said on receiving the best international female newcomer award. She also won a Golden Melody for her song, Lost Sandback.

It was great to see the crowd giving many of our local singers and artistes the same support and encouragement they gave to artistes from abroad. And because the winners were voted by the public, it showed that local artistes were not forgotten.

Among them were boyband Thomas and Jack who took home four awards, and last year’s Astro Star Quest (formerly known as Astro Talent Quest) first runner-up Lan Kah Fai who won two.

The concept of winners singing their winning songs each time they receive an award gave everyone a chance to listen to the songs and helped give exposure to new artistes and their songs.

Chan himself collected two Golden Melody awards for his Guilty Conscience and After 700 Years.

He was also declared the best international male singer and took home the best song of the year for Guilty Conscience.

That ended the award show on a high note and fans can only hope that next year, the show will be equally if not more exciting with even more artistes

After the Lehman Brothers investment bank crashed last year, jobs were lost, pension plans evaporated, and the entire global economy was sent into a tailspin. While the catastrophe left countless financial casualties in its wake, one of the victims was the beloved Hong Kong singer/actor Jacky Cheung, who lost well in excess of $12 million worth of Lehman Brothers investments. Now, perhaps because of his own financial crisis, Cheung has returned to music, with his first studio album in 6 years. Titled 'Life is Like a Dream,' the album is supposed to hit stores on Friday, although there has been very little promotion conducted in anticipation of the work. JpopAsia reports that the album will feature ten tracks--9 in Cantonese, and one in English.

Fahrenheit members Wu Chun, Jiro Wang, Aaron Yan and Calvin Chen attended their "Fahrenheit's fantasy world concert DVD Autograph" session in Kwai Fong Metro Plaza yesterday. Over 1,000 fans turned up to support the event which was supposed to start at 3pm. Although Fahrenheit were 50 minutes late, it didn't deter the fans' hospitality and warmth towards them. The members sang and danced on stage, sharing their blow kisses to the fans. Jiro took out his camera to take pictures of the fans, and the girls screamed their heads off. They also played games with the fans, during the game, one of the girl fans grabbed hold of Chun's hand and touched him all over the chest. Chun was so embarrassed. Chun revealed that apart from having a concert in Hong Kong earlier, he hasn't openly played games with his fans for about 6 months. Talking about the fan who touched his chest, Chun said the girl was very brave. Reporter asked him what if the fan touched his most important part of his body? Chun replied that he has made the necessary precaution for that. Chun went on to say that he had his back touched by his fan in the airport once. Jiro added that he also had his buttocks touched by a fan in Korea.

Talking about that Fahrenheit may split up, the four responded by saying that rumor has been reported on and off for 4 years now. That is only a rumor, in fact, the four gets on ever so well and their relationship is getting better and better.
